Bores are usually completed from a launch shaft to a target or reception shaft.

For short drive lengths, in case no accuracy is required, the boring can be performed unguided. Greater accuracy can be achieved when using long casings. Unguided borings can be made using house connection machines or long frame machines.

For long drive lengths or for high accuracy requirements the boring should be performed guided using pilot rods. Guided borings can be made with compact machines or long frame machines.

In special cases bores are performed out of a launch shaft without reaching a target shaft. This procedure is called dead end boring and is used for house connections or for underground connection to an existing sewer line.
